National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI)

This program is administered by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and funded by the Federal Highway Administration.

Students who attended the 2024 National Summer Transportation Institute learned about science, engineering and transportation. The week-long residential summer camp was held on the Missouri S&T campus from July 21-26, 2024. Activities included hands-on labs, field trips and presentations by professionals working in transportation related fields.

Who can apply?

Rising 10th–12th graders. Limited to 20 students.

Application Requirement

Students are required to submit the following:

  • The online application
  • A copy of high school transcript
  • A copy of ACT/SAT/PSAT scores (If available)
  • Counselor and Teacher recommendation letters emailed to Program Coordinator, Dr. David Wang (y.wang@mst.edu, with “NSTI recommendation letter” in subject line) directly from the recommenders.
  • Proof of accident/health insurance, and
  • One-page typed essay describing your career objective(s), interest in transportation, and how NSTI can assist you in reaching your goals (double-spaced, times new roman 12-point font, one-inch margins).

We prefer that students submit the following:

  • One letter of recommendation from a school counselor.
  • One letter of recommendation from a computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, or science teacher.

Objectives and Activities

Objectives:

The objectives of NSTI are to improve STEM skills, provide awareness to high school students about transportation careers, and to encourage them to consider transportation-related courses of study in their higher education pursuits.

Activities:

Students will participate in

  • enrichment and preparatory coursework in computing, mathematics and physics and will cover different aspects of transportation (Air, Land, and Infrastructure)
  • hands-on labs
  • field trips 
  • presentations by various professionals working in transportation related fields

Missouri S&T reserves the right to cancel any program in the event of insufficient registrations, severe weather or natural disaster. In the event of cancellation, registrants will be notified immediately via email and phone, and all fees will be returned in full.
