Hundreds of high school students lived on the Missouri S&T campus for multiple days this summer for the Jackling Intro to Engineering camp, with many receiving scholarships and using learning materials provided by Oxy — an international energy company and chemical manufacturer focused on reducing carbon emissions.
“Oxy is a wonderful partner for the university and is always excited to support students who are interested in pursuing their passions related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” says Courtney Jones, director of the Kummer Center for STEM Education. “The Jackling Intro to Engineering camp is S&T’s largest summer camp and exposes students to several engineering disciplines, so it is a natural fit for Oxy to support.”
In summer 2023, Oxy sponsored one of three sessions of the camp. This year, they doubled their commitment and sponsored two.
“It is so important that we have a strong pipeline of engineers and scientists in the workforce eager to help solve society’s most pressing challenges,” Jones says. “Oxy’s support for our camp will make a significant difference for future generations of engineers who want to make the world a better place.”
Campers took part in hands-on activities and design competitions throughout their five days at S&T. They participated in lectures and demonstrations, visited several engineering departments and laboratories, and had time for recreational activities in the evenings.
“On top of being a great learning opportunity, this camp is also a lot of fun,” Jones says. “Campers get to experience life on a college campus, and they meet S&T professors, students, alumni and, more than likely, many of their future classmates.”
